“Are you sure you don’t want to stay?” I asked as I watched Hannah slip back into her clothes.

She nodded and picked her glasses off the nightstand and slid them into place, then smoothed her hair.

“I’m sure, but thank you for offering,” she said. “And thank you for a great night. Dinner was amazing.”

I stood and stepped into my boxer briefs then closed the distance between us.

“So was dessert,” I said, and watched the blush spread across her face before kissing her forehead.

We walked into the living room and I continued to the kitchen to retrieve Hannah’s leftovers from the refrigerator. She moved to the other side of the counter to retrieve the keys from her purse.

“Do you want to take a couple cupcakes home?”

“No, I’m good.”

“Are you sure?” I asked. “You didn’t get to eat one.”

“I had to taste test, so I had one before I got here.”

“No wonder you couldn’t finish your dinner.”

“I couldn’t finish my dinner because could feed an army with what was on my plate.”

I walked around the counter and placed my hands on her hips. “Before it was a family of four and now it’s an army? I think you’re just making excuses.”

She rolled her eyes and laughed. “How about, big enough to feed a baseball player?”

“That works.”

I echoed her laughter and gave her a quick peck, enjoying how easy this feels. I’ve always liked Hannah and even though we were more friendly co-workers than friends, I respected her. She’s smart, no-nonsense, and keeps the team whipped into shape. Now that I’ve noticed her in a whole new way, those old feelings are still there, but the new ones mix in, adding layers to this relationship that I’ve never experienced before. I don’t want to just keep her around so we can fuck and go out occasionally, I want to make love to her, get to know her, spend time with her. That last thought reminds me.

“Dan opened his big mouth before I could ask, but we’re renting a boat next week and taking a slow ride down to the Keys. Would you like to come along?” I saw the hesitation in her eyes so I kept talking to both stop her from saying no and convince her to say yes. “We did it last year and it was a lot of fun. Sabrina and Lexi are coming this year so you won’t be the only female on the boat.”

“Who else is going?”

“Cal and Monte.”

Her brow furrowed. “I don’t know if it’s a good idea, Jack.”

That’s not a no. I shifted closer and squeezed her waist.

“I know you want to keep this quiet, but these guys are my best friends. They won’t say anything if we don’t want them to.” I kissed her forehead, then the tip of her nose. “It’ll be fun. I promise.”

She let out a long sigh then looked up at me through her eyelashes. “Does anyone ever say no to you?”

“Surprisingly, yes,” I said. “But I’m hoping you don’t.”

“Okay, I’ll go.
